Twilight slumped at her desk, head in hand, and gazed idly out the classroom window. Across the empty courtyard soared the spires of Canterlot, the royal library towering above the rest. The purple unicorn sighed wistfully. How she wished she could be there now, unearthing the secrets burried in those dusty texts. What a waste for Celestia's most faithful student to be stuck here, amongst the... common ponies.

"Ms. Sparkle, are you still with us?" chided the teacher, a greying Mr. Nagg. "Can you translate that last sentence into Equine?"

Twilight rose and delivered a perfect translation, then sat, sinking back into her thoughts. Staring into the distance, her eyes unfocused, she suddenly noticed movement: something small and dark, with a curious glint, had fallen out of the sky, crossing her field of vision. She blinked. It lay on the grass near the school's small pond. Looking close she realized it was a book. She craned her neck to see where it could possibly have dropped from, but found nothing save for the faint crescent of the waxing moon, barely visible against the afternoon sky.

When the bell rang Twilight saddled her schoolbag and trotted purposefully down to the courtyard. There on a small rise lay the mysterious book, a thickly bound brown tome with a gold relief emblazoned across the front. She approached it, glancing around furtively; it seemed no one else had taken any notice. She kneeled and touched a hoof to the cover. Adorning it was the stylized profile of a regal-looking unicorn, its eye a striking sapphire. Twilight knew this book was something special—something meant only for her. Her pulse quickening, she opened it and read aloud the words inscribed on the inside cover:

"The pony whose name is written in this notebook shall die."
A flash mashup (flashup?) of the opening scenes of my two favorite cartoons. Hopefully the title doesn't give the game away.

If this confuses and enrages you, these links should elucidate:
